The Digital SAT Format for 2026: A Complete Breakdown

If you're taking the SAT in 2026, you're taking the Digital SAT — delivered through College Board's Bluebook app. Here's everything you need to know about the format, timing, and what makes it different.

How Adaptive Testing Works

The Digital SAT is a multi-stage adaptive test (MST). Here's what that means:

1. Module 1 (Reading & Writing) has a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions

2. Based on your Module 1 performance, Module 2 adjusts in difficulty

3. If you do well on Module 1 → Module 2 is harder (but worth more scaled points)

4. If you struggle on Module 1 → Module 2 is easier (but caps your maximum score lower)

5. The same applies for Math Modules 3 and 4

This is crucial: doing well on Module 1 matters enormously because it determines your scoring ceiling for Module 2.

Reading & Writing Question Types

The RW section combines what used to be separate Reading and Writing sections:

-Craft and Structure — vocabulary in context, text structure, purpose

-Information and Ideas — central ideas, details, inferences, command of evidence

-Standard English Conventions — grammar, punctuation, sentence structure

-Expression of Ideas — rhetorical synthesis, transitions

Each question has its own short passage (no more long reading passages like the old SAT). Most passages are 25–150 words.

Math Question Types

-Algebra — linear equations, systems, inequalities

-Advanced Math — quadratics, polynomials, exponential functions

-Problem-Solving & Data Analysis — ratios, percentages, probability, statistics

-Geometry & Trigonometry — area, volume, circles, triangles, trig

About 75% of Math questions are multiple choice; 25% are student-produced response (grid-in). You can use the built-in Desmos graphing calculator for all math questions.

What's Different from Previous Years

For 2026, the Digital SAT format remains largely the same as the 2024-2025 versions, with a few refinements:

-Scoring tables have been updated with more test data

-Question pool has expanded

-College Board has improved the Bluebook app interface

How to Prepare

The best way to prepare for the Digital SAT is to practice in the exact format:

1. Use an adaptive mock test that replicates the real 4-module structure

2. Practice time management — 32 min for 27 RW questions means ~71 seconds per question

3. Get comfortable with screen reading — no paper, no pencil (except for Math scratch work)

SATMock's mock tests replicate the exact Bluebook structure — try a free score quiz to see the format in action.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Digital SAT in 2026?

The Digital SAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes: two Reading & Writing modules (32 min each), two Math modules (35 min each), and a 10-minute break between sections.

How many questions are on the Digital SAT?

The Digital SAT has 98 questions total: 54 Reading & Writing questions (27 per module) and 44 Math questions (22 per module).

Is the Digital SAT adaptive?

Yes. The Digital SAT uses section-level adaptivity: your performance on Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2 in each section. A harder Module 2 means a higher potential score.
